Lung Function Testing

 Lung Function testing

Also known as pulmonary function testing (PFT), are the tests designed to measure how well your lungs are working. These tests assess and measure various volumes, and capacities of one’s breathing and also help compare them with expected normal values which should be there for you. Therefore, this test can provide insight into your lung health.

Types of Lung Function Tests

  1. Spirometry
    • Measures the amount and flow of air you can inhale and exhale. It is often used to diagnose asthma and COPD and assess lungs in ILDs
  2. Lung Volume Testing (Body Plethysmography)
    • Determines the total lung capacity, including how much air remains in your lungs after exhalation.
  3. Diffusion Capacity Test (DLCO)
    • Evaluates how well oxygen diffuses from your lungs into your blood, which is crucial for assessing diseases affecting the lung tissue.
  4. Peak Flow Measurement
    • Assesses the maximum speed of exhalation, commonly used to monitor asthma.
